Getting to know Simon Dingle

Most office workers that have the radio set to 5FM will be familiar with the weekly (tech)5 show during Grant and Anele’s slot, hosted by Simon Dingle. You may have also come across his ZA Tech Show netcast or his numerous columns. Simply put, he’s a big name (an icon, if you will) who is hard to miss. I love his tweets and people take his opinion seriously, as he aims “to stay on top of new technologies and trends so he can break it down for everyone else”.

So it’s obvious the man loves all things tech, but I learned a number of other interesting things about him when I interviewed him for my October COUP article. He’s humble (never enters award shows himself and despite having worked with now famous radio names such as Grant and Anele, Camilla Bath, Poppy Ntshongwane and Sias du Plessis back in the day he’s quick to state he “can’t claim any of their success”) and first made a radio appearance at the age of 12 on John Robbie’s show. As if that’s not enough, he sources content himself, admits he gets schmoozed (but does his best to stay objective) and agrees with me that recalling an email doesn’t make the message go away, it just makes you look stupid.

About Leigh Andrews

Leigh is a word lover. She enjoys editing, researching the mundane, reading anything and everything, writing short stories, scribbling notes, blogging and Twitter-stalking (see? Total logophile). With so much time spent clicking and scrolling, she does manage to get out sometimes. She’s a very new jogger and spends her spare time with her furry four-legged children and hubby, sighing at sunsets from her swing bench. That’s the life. Twitter: @Leigh_Andrews
